THE WORK

Hey Guys!

Lately, the conversation on here has been about being gentle with self. Another facet of self care that’s important however is keeping yourself accountable. Finding the balance between being gentle with self and keeping yourself accountable is something I’m still struggling with but today we’ll be focused on the latter.

“Like anyone you love, you have to learn to respect yourself and that means becoming a person you’re proud of- one who holds themselves to commitments, shows up when they say they will and takes the needs of others into consideration. Self- love does not mean putting yourself ahead of others without good reason.”

Keeping yourself accountable means that sometimes you won’t feel like showing up for things you need to but you go anyway because you made the commitment. It means actually doing the work you need to do, to get where you need to be. Yes, reading words of affirmation in the comfort of your bed listening to music with the scented candles burning is a great and peaceful feeling but self love means knowing that it won’t always be enough.

It means that sometimes you’ll have to survive through days where you’re working through the words of affirmation and trying to actualize them even when you’re not having the best day.

IMG_5455Keeping yourself accountable more often than not means being uncomfortable now to be comfortable long term, to be better then. As I’ve mentioned a few times in the last few posts, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone because you need to even if you don’t want to is work. This work is part of self care because sometimes we get so comfortable in our wallowing or distracting ourselves with our luxurious self care practices (face masks, long showers etc) that we forget we need to pick ourselves up and push ourselves to be and ‘human’ cause we need to be better.

“Yes, we need to accept ourselves as capable and worthwhile people before we are able to get our best word done. But I think there’s a lot to be said for acknowledging that we do need to work (sometimes a considerable amount of work) on ourselves. Self- love should be the vehicle we use to move forward, not the final destination we arrive at. It’s not an excuse to stay caught in unhealthy patterns or to justify a state that we’re unhappy in. You cannot love yourself into completion. Sometimes you’re going to have to work yourself there.”
